The officers filed out, and as I walked in, the young man was on the edge of his chair like a tiger ready to pounce. Saliva dripped from his chin, and he was hissing, snarling, and shouting obscenities. Books I had read about demonology came to mind. Some had advised that the way to deal with people in this condition was to shout “Name yourself, you evil spirit!” Others insisted that you need to fast and pray before dealing with a situation like this. None of it made sense to me in that moment, but I could recognize God’s peace, and I trusted him to make something happen. I knew Holy Spirit would take charge if I stayed open to him.
As I continued to walk toward the man, I felt an unconditional love for him. I said, “It’s going to be okay,” and I could see the visible effect of those words on his demeanor. It was like peace had just flooded the room. He became calm, and I was able to tell him that his family was alive. He started to cry and thank God.
I then asked if he could sense the peace that entered the room, and he said he could. “That’s because Jesus is in me,” I said. “You’re sensing his presence.” I asked if he wanted to have Jesus in him too, so that that peace would remain when I left the room. He nodded. “When you give your life to him,” I said, “you’ll be free from all the wrong you’ve done in God’s eyes. You’ll be completely forgiven.”
We prayed a simple prayer together as he gave his life to Jesus, and it was like a burden he had been carrying for a long time lifted. We talked for a while about what he faced in the judicial system as a consequence of his actions, but I assured him that God would never leave him; the peace he felt would never leave him if he stayed connected to Jesus.
Suddenly a funny feeling came over me. I had been so focused on this man, I’d forgotten where I was. I turned around to see six officers staring wide-eyed through the glass. Three officers had barely been able to contain him, so they couldn’t believe one guy had walked into that room alone and calmed the situation. Of course I didn’t do it; it was Holy Spirit!
I didn’t need to engage in strange and complicated tactics of spiritual warfare in order to see Holy Spirit work. He did so in a loving, contemporary, and very normal way with this hurting young man.
God wants to use you too, just as you are, wherever you are. No strange behaviors are required. All you need is the desire to work with Holy Spirit in the circumstances of your everyday life, and he wants to do so in such a normal, natural way. This brings us to the topic of the next chapter. You see, sometimes Holy Spirit’s leading is as natural as a gut feeling.
